While some view efforts to expand opportunities as contentious, this often stems from a misunderstanding of their broader societal value. However, recognizing the importance of building diverse and skilled teams is essential in today’s U.S. workforce. Varied perspectives drive innovation, attract top talent, and enhance competitiveness. As the inaugural Chair, I am privileged to collaborate with a distinguished team of leaders and activists who champion a platform wholeheartedly dedicated to transforming the landscape of hospitality education and the industry itself for years to come. Our fundamental belief is grounded in intentionality—we recognize that without deliberate efforts to recruit students from Black and Hispanic communities, the representation of these communities among hospitality students and future industry leaders will persist at unacceptably low levels.
We are resolute in our commitment to action, moving beyond mere rhetoric or restating challenges. The endorsement of our efforts by both hospitality education leaders and corporate figures underscores the urgency of our mission, particularly in light of recent rulings and counterproductive initiatives. I implore every member of the AHEAD family to steadfastly uphold and champion our mission at every juncture.
